One of my most desired service request is treating frizzy hair. There are so many variations on taming the unruly strands so I want to take this time to breakdown your options.
What is a smoothing treatment?
A temporary service to smooth hair by taming frizz and filling cuticle with protein. The treatment last 3-6 months, helps with daily manageability, adds shine and cuts styling time in half. This will NOT make your hair permanently straight or effect your hair color. You will need to use sulfate free shampoos which are better for your hair anyway!
Now… Let’s define the 2 types of treatments:
1. Keratin – Straighten hair without causing any damage to the hair follicles. This treatment is 100% formaldehyde-free, will remove frizz, add shine, seal in color, and decrease blow dry time.
2. Brazilian Blowout – A stronger version of the keratin treatment using ingredients such as methylene glycol, formalin, methanal, and methanethiol. When heated, these ingredients release tiny traces of formaldehyde, which is the big stigma when comparing the difference. This treatment is recommended for maximum smoothing, fighting frizz and reducing styling time.
BOTH of these systems will offer the same benefits, but differ for specific hair types. You will have to discuss your options and what is best for your hair with your professional to determine which route to go. The buzzwords “Brazilian”, “Keratin”, “Protein” and “Smoothing” treatments are all over the place when researching the difference. Ultimately, it is about your desired result and concern with any chemical use that will determine the right system for you. Every brand may have different steps in applying and processing the system, but they all will help make your hair smooth and shiny.
I have researched dozens of brands that offer some type of “smoothing system”. I mainly use products by Marcia Teixeira. Their company offers both options for me to better personalize each client’s service to perfection. Their formulas range from mild to strong, and there is something for every hair type. I have access to other brands if requested and can customize a treatment for almost EVERYONE!
As the products evolve, there are newer products coming with alternate smoothing ingredients to include amino acids and glyoxylic acid. I haven’t tried any yet, but I will and I am excited to learn more expand and my library of options!
