Showering in Blues

I know it sounds like a break-up song title, but I literally am talking about washing your hair with Blue shampoo!

Many of my clients are curious and I see more and more stylists advertising use of such products, so I think it’s time to help explain the concept and help determine if it’s right for you.

What are Color Infused Shampoos?  Exactly what they are labeled as they will do.  Red hair color clients LOVE a good Red Infused shampoo system to help keep their tones rich and push color to last longer.  The concept is simple enough for anyone looking to keep colors such as red or chocolate brown vibrant and rich.  Color shampoos can also be used to cancel colors out… like in the salon, color can be used to counteract unwanted pigments.  When highlighting light to dark brown hair, there can be a remaining hint or yellow, orange or even red.  Colorists are trained to use professional products to help cancel those tones out and for anyone looking to maintain color, these shampoo options are your answer.

When determining what color you need to help counteract any unwanted pigments we fall back on the basics of color theory.  For example; if your hair has more yellow undertones, you will reach for a violet based product. Violet/Purple shampoo also works great for gray hair! For brassy colors, orange and red-orange, you will need a blue based product.  The possibilities with color are endless, but the basics always stay true to the this theory.

Anymore, almost every hair care line makes a blue or violet shampoo to help keep highlights neutral and brassy tones out.  Highlights can be affected by many outside factors after leaving the salon including water, the sun and even heat styling.  Therefore, it’s important to maintain your color at home with the right products.

Please keep in mind; color infused shampoos will not make your hair darker or lighter, and if you you are nervous about using one at home please consult with your colorist.

Top Products I recommend…

Dynamic Blonde by Framesi Banish the brass! Keep your blonde/gray/white hair brighter & more refined, while keeping your color 95% longer.  I currently stock this in salon and as a take home offer complimentary samples for all of my newly highlighted clients!

Brass Off! by Matrix Cool it down with New Brass Off, Total Results’s 1st system to neutralize brassy tones, while moisturizing hair and protecting it from breakage.

Color Balance by JOICO – You have the choice of blue or violet depending on your shade but you should not use this daily.  Tone-correcting pigments attach to the hair fibers & stay attached through multiple shampoos.

Blue Malva by AVEDA– This products takes me back to my roots and just has a special place in my heart.  Technically can be used on all shades of hair because it is not as strong as some of the others listed and can be used daily.  I love the smell as well!

Anyone can benefit from a color brightening shampoo system, help maintain the amazing color you left the salon with at home!
